In a new interview, ‘The Vampire Diaries’ actress addresses the obvious heat and chemistry she had with her ex, Ian, at the People’s Choice Awards on Jan. 8, admitting that she and Ian were just being honest.
Fans of Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder must have felt like they had died and went to heaven on Jan. 8 when the two stars — and former lovers — took the stage, and actually kissed, while accepting the People’s Choice award for Favorite On-Screen Chemistry. It was a great moment, and according to Nina, she and her ex-beau were just being true to themselves!
Nina Dobrev On Her People’s Choice Moment With Ian Somerhalder
“All it was was just honest,” Nina told E! on Jan. 10. “You call a spade a spade.”
Stepping on stage to accept their award, Nina and Ian both joked about the mild awkwardness of winning Favorite On-Screen Chemistry, even mentioning how their on-screen romance has outlasted their off-screen one. Then in a shocking turn of events, Ian leaned in and planted a kiss on Nina’s cheek.
But when Nina says the moment was “honest,” she’s not referring to that kiss, but instead to the funny commentary that came before it. “I was trying to figure out, like what do you say in that situation?” Nina explained, reiterating that she and Ian are still — but only just — good friends:
We were like, we’re cool, we’re friends and costars. He’s a great person, I’m a great person… I mean, I think I’m pretty awesome. So it doesn’t need to be awkward and I think everyone expected it to be awkward. We made fun of ourselves and just had fun.
And that’s why the moment was so pure and perfect.
