There have been times in Serena Williams’ amazing career in which she actually looks scary on the tennis court because she’s that good. The 2013 US Open has been one of those times. Serena continued to roll through the competition on Sept. 6 and now a matchup against Victoria Azarenka, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, is the only thing that stands between her and yet another major championship.
Serena defeated Li Na in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-3, and really didn’t face any sort of a challenge in the match until the end, when it took her seven tries to put away the match.
The impressive win just added to Serena’s dominant performance at the 2013 US Open. She has not lost a single set in the tournament so far, and at one point ran off a 24-game win streak, both incredible feats.
“I have been really focused,” Serena told ESPN. “I set some goals for myself in [each] match and am really trying to reach those goals every time.”
Now a face-off against Victoria — a rematch from 2012′s US Open — is Serena’s last hurdle when the two go toe-to-toe on Sept. 8. Victoria is no amateur by any means, coming into the match as the second seed, but she knows that her work is cut out for her.
“You’ve got to fight. You’ve got to run. You’ve got to grind. And you’ve got to bite with your teeth for whatever opportunity you have,” Victoria said after her semifinal match. “She’s obviously an amazing player. She’s the greatest of all time.”
